Presented by:
Michael Behrens, Ph.D.
Vice President, Harbor WildWatch
If you want to know what goes on below the surface of Puget Sound, Mike Behrens is the person to ask! This Gig Harbor resident is well known among the marine science community up and down the West Coast. He has a B.S. in Biology from Cal Poly, a M.A. in Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology, and a Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology from University of California, Santa Barbara. Currently an Assistant Professor at Pacific Lutheran University, Mike’s research included studies of the physiological ecology on herbivorous fishes on the Olympic Peninsula, disease ecology of sea urchins, and the scope and implications of the international wildlife trade.
Mike also dedicates his time giving back to the community
by serving as the Vice President of the marine education
organization, Harbor WildWatch. Founded in 2004, Harbor
WildWatch’s mission is to inspire stewardship for the Puget
Sound by providing educational opportunities to the people
of our local communities. They provide interactive programs
for students and the public that introduce them to marine
animals that inhabit our local beaches. Mike acts as Harbor
WildWatch’s science advisor, diver, and valuable member of
the Board.
Mike will be educating us on the environmental programs Harbor WildWatch offers to the community. He and the team will be able to answer questions about Puget Sound and the marine creatures that inhabit this unique estuary.
